Premium cable channel Showtime’s critically acclaimed television comedy-drama series Shameless: The Complete First Season has some seriously respectable lineage. It’s executive produced by John Wells, whose projects include such TV smashes as ER and The West Wing.
Shameless stars William H. Macy (The Lincoln Lawyer) as the South side of Chicago’s Frank Gallagher, a proud, working-class patriarch to a motley brood of six smart, spirited and independent kids who, in all honesty, would probably be better off without him. In Frank’s booze-addled view, parenting just eats into his hard-earned, bar-crawling and carousing time — so he leaves it up to eldest daughter Fiona (Emmy Rossum, The Phantom of the Opera) to hold down the fort. Life has appointed Fiona as the unofficial matriarch of the family and she’s fiercely determined to keep her dysfunctional family happy and whole, even if it means sacrificing her own personal needs. Needless to say, a half-dozen kids means a half-dozen unique sets of circumstances (and at least as many storylines)!
Based on the long-running, award-winning British TV show of the same name, Shameless was adapted for American television by Wells and original U.K. series creator Paul Abbott (State of Play).
The series also stars Joan Cusack (Mars Needs Moms), Justin Chatwin (Taken) and Steve Howey (TV’s Reba).
Tied the show’s season two premiere on Showtime on Jan. 8, 2012, the DVD and Blu-ray editions of Shameless season one contain the following bonus features:
- “Bringing Shameless to America” behind-the-scenes documentary that delves into the art of writing the audacious material featured in the series from the perspective of executive producer John Wells, creator Paul Abbott and the production team.
- “Shameless: Bringing the “Fun” in “Dysfunctional”” John Wells and Paul Abbott discuss the importance of getting the right actors for the roles, while the cast relates their desires to step into these characters’ skins.
- “A Shameless Discussion About Sex” no-holds-barred discussion about the awkwardness, anxiety and hilarious situations that come with filming frequent sex scenes on the set of the series.
- Shameless season two sneak peek
- commentary for two episodes including the series pilot
- deleted scenes
- Ultraviolet digital copy (Blu-ray only)
