A single act of both compassion and arrogance leads to a battle unlike any other in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s reboot (or re-imagining or whatever they want to call it these days) of the beloved science-fiction/action film franchise.
The movie stars James Franco (127 Hours) as Will Rodman, a neuro-scientist living in San Francisco who’s trying to develop a cure for Alzheimer’s disease by testing a drug that will build brain cells on chimpanzees. After a test subject’s baby, Caesar, is orphaned, Will decides to raise him at home on his own with his Alzheimer-stricken father (John Lithgow, Blow Out). Caesar quickly shows signs that the drug that was in his mother has worked on him, giving him a human-like intelligence. But the living arrangement becomes a problem when Caesar is taken away from Will and forced to live in a primate facility. As Caesar’s intelligence continues to grow, he begins to stake his claim as the leader of his new primate counterparts, which will ultimately result in, well, a world populated by apes.
Directed by Rupert Wyatt (The Escapist), the movie co-stars Freida Pinto (You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger), Brian Cox (Red) and Andy Serkis (King Kong). More importantly, it features stunning visual effects from the team behind such razzle-dazzle fare as Avatar and the Lord of the Rings films.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ combination of stars, special effects and a fresh take on an old story proved to be a potent one: Opening wide in U.S. theaters in August 2011, the movie grossed an outstanding $175 million at the domestic box office.
