My Fair LadyThe classic musical My Fair Lady, starring the stunning and irrepressible Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany’s), got a restoration so it would be spick and span for its high-definition Blu-ray debut.

Based on George Bernard Shaw‘s play Pygmalion, the movie stars Hepburn as Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl who becomes the subject of a wager of a snobbish phonetics professor (Rex Harrison, The Ghost of Mrs. Muir) that he can transform her into the toast of English high society. Along the way, the free-spirited Eliza starts to rub off on her stuffy teacher.

Directed by George Cukor (A Star Is Born), the romance film won eight Academy Awards when it was  released in theaters in 1964, including Best Picture. The other categories it took home a statue for were Best Actor (Harrison), Best Director, art direction, cinematography, costume design, music and sound. The film also was nominated for supporting actor (Stanley Holloway), supporting actress (Gladys Cooper), editing and adapted screenplay, but nothing for Hepburn.

The Blu-ray, which presents the wonderful songs in 7.1 HD Master Audio, includes these special features:

  • “More Loverly Than Ever: My Fair Lady Then and Now”
  • 1964 featurettes and footage and audio from the film’s original shoot nearly 50 years ago
  • alternate Hepburn vocals
  • “Show Me” galleries”
  • “Comments on a Lady

All have been on earlier DVD versions.
