The inspirational family movie Dolphin Tale is even more sweet and inspiration as it’s based on a true story — and the subject of the film is also its star.
Rated PG, the drama tells the story of an injured dolphin who’s found by a boy (Nathan Gamble, TV’s Hank) and brought to a marine hospital for help. Named Winter, the dolphin (played by the actual dolphin that inspired the film) loses her tail, but without a tail, she may not survive. Thanks to the devotion of the boy, a marine biologist (Harry Connick Jr., Copycat) and a prosthetist (Morgan Freeman, Red), Winter gets a new tail and a second chance at life.
Kris Kristofferson (Blade) and Ashley Judd (Tooth Fairy) also star in the film, which was directed by Charles Martin Smith, best known as a character actor in Lucky You and Jack and Jill vs. the World.
Reportedly made for $37 million, Dolphin Tale grossed a tidy $64.4 million during its wide release in theaters.
Critics generally approved of the film too. According to David Edwards of the U.K.’s Daily Mirror, “While it plays hard and loose with the facts, this tale of a boy and a bottlenose dolphin is guaranteed to create a tidal wave’s worth of tears.”
