MoneyballBrad Pitt (Seven) made his debut into sports films with Moneyball.

Rated PG-13, the movie tells the true story of Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane, who turned baseball on its head by putting together a winning team based on computer-generated analysis.

Like most sports films, Moneyball tells an inspirational, underdog story. Beane, a former player who didn’t succeed despite his promise, has a budget that’s much lower than his competition, but his desire and dedication push him to try something new. He finds that in the analysis of Peter Brand (played by a more low-key than usual Jonah Hill, Get Him to the Greek), despite pushback from the team’s manager (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jack Goes Boating).

Directed by Bennett Miller (Capote), the biography movie also stars Robin Wright (The Conspirator) and was written by power-players Steven Zaillian (The Girl With Dragon Tattoo) and Academy Award-winner Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network), based on the book by Michael Lewis.

Moneyball grossed $63.6 million in theaters and was applauded by critics and audiences alike. New Yorker‘s David Denby said the film is “one of the most soulful of baseball movies — it confronts the anguish of a very tough game.”
