Not to be confused with the short-lived 2007 TV show of the same name, Drive is an art house film trying to be an action film, or an action film masquerading as an art film. Take your pick.
The movie stars indie favorite Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) as a stuntman who moonlights as a driver for people who need drivers who don’t ask questions. A loner, Gosling’s driver meets and falls for his neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan, Never Let Me Go), whose husband is in jail. When he’s released and needs help with a heist, the driver agrees — for the sake of Irene and her young son. But after the heist goes wrong, Gosling ends up with a contract on his head.
The R-rated film also stars Bryan Cranston (The Lincoln Lawyer), Albert Brooks (Broadcast News), Ron Perlman (TV’s Sons of Anarchy), Christina Hendricks (Life As We Know It) and Oscar Isaacs (Sucker Punch). It was directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Valhalla Rising), with a script by Hossein Amini (Killshot) based on the book
Critics hailed Drive, with glowing reviews that earned it the movie a whopping 98% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Detroit News‘ Tom Long said, “Drive is pedal-to-the-metal stuff. Don’t get behind the wheel unless you can take the rush.”
As someone who was very bored in my theater screening of the film, I agree with MovieFix‘s William Kostakis, who said, “What Drive is trying to do is very clear, but clear intent doesn’t forgive a film that’s mostly flat.”
Audiences did mostly like Drive, although not as much as critics, scoring the movie at 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It grossed a low $34 million when it was in wide release in theaters.
