Not a remake of the 1987 thriller of the same name starring Michael Caine, this The Whistleblower is based on a true story and stars Rachel Weisz (The Lovely Bones).
The movie tells the story of Kathryn Bolkovac (Weisz), a Nebraska police officer who takes a job as a peacekeeper for the U.N. in post-war Bosnia. She believes she’s going to be doing good, helping to rebuild the devastated country, until she discovers corruption and cover-ups in a world of private contractors and multi-national diplomatic doubletalk.
Rated R, the film also stars Vanessa Redgrave (Letters to Juliet), Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse), Monica Bellucci (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and David Strathairn (The Firm) — a solid cast.
The Whistleblower was released in a few theaters between August and October 2011, but this DVD and Blu-ray by far gives the movie its biggest audience.
When it was in theaters, The Whistleblower, the debut film by writer-director Larysa Kondracki, grossed $1.1 million and got favorable reviews from critics. Orlando Sentinel‘s Roger Moore said of the movie: “A first-rate one-woman-against-the-system drama, a film benefiting from grim recreations of an ugly reality and a stellar cast determined to expose it.” High praise indeed.
20th Century Fox hasn’t put much on the DVD and Blu-ray in the way of special features. The versions only include cast and crew interviews. A short documentary on the actual events and how closely they are followed in the movie would have been nice.
