Hugh Jackman (Snow Flower and the Secret Fan) plays a former boxer whose sport has been taken over by robots in the family movie Real Steel.

The science-fiction film is based on a short story by Richard Matheson, who wrote the novels that inspired the films I Am Legend and What Dreams May Come, among others.

Real Steel centers around Charlie Kenton (Jackman) and his relationship with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo, Thor). When Max’s mother dies, Charlie agrees to give up custody — for a price — to Max’s aunt (Hope Davis, The Family Tree). But Max does have to spend a summer with his biological father, which ends up being quite the adventure.

While Charlie tries to make some money in tournaments with a new super robot, Max finds an old sparring robot that he’s determined to transform into a champion.

Pete Hammond of Box Office Magazine called the film “Rocky with robots … a heartwarming movie for everyone.”

Audiences liked it too. Real Steel grossed $82.6 million in theaters.

The PG-13 movie also stars Evangeline Lilly (TV’s Lost), Anthony Mackie (The Adjustment Bureau) and Kevin Durand (I Am Number Four).

The film has three home entertainment disc versions, all with special features.

The single DVD carries:

• bloopers
• “Building the Bots” featurette
• “Making of Metal Valley” featurette

The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack has all those plus:

• deleted “Butterfly” story line and extended “Meet Ambush” scene with introduction by director Shawn Levy (Date Night)
• featurette “Sugar Ray Leonard: Cornerman’s Champ”
• featurette “Countdown to the Fight — The Charlie Kenton Story”
• and the interactive Second Screen feature, which syncs the movie with a computer so you can watch extras while the film plays, as shown on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The three-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack has all the DVD and Blu-ray special features as well as a downloadable digital copy of the movie.

All the DVD extras and the featurette “Sugar Ray Leonard: Cornerman’s Champ” also are included with the standard-definition and high-definition digital downloads.
