Colin Farrell (Horrible Bosses) and Keira Knightley (Never Let Me Go) find love in dangerous places in London Boulevard, a 2010 crime movie from Ireland.
Farrell plays Mitchel, an ex-con who’s hired to look after Knightley’s Charlotte, a reclusive actress who’s in demand by the paparazzi. Mitchel and Charlotte fall for each other, but their love is challenged when London gangster Gant (Ray Winstone, Cold Mountain) forces Mitchel to work for him.
The R-rated movie’s stellar cast also includes David Thewlis (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2), Anna Friel (Limitless), Ben Chaplin (Dorian Gray) and Eddie Marsan (The Disappearance of Alice Creed).
Based on the novel by Ken Bruen, the film is written and directed by William Monahan, Oscar-winning writer of The Departed. London Boulevard is his directorial debut.
The movie was released on just a handful of screens in the U.S., so the DVD and Blu-ray offers its biggest audience.
Critics were so-so on London Boulevard. New York Post‘s Kyle Smith said, “Monahan’s trademark tart dialogue is as strong as ever, and Farrell and Winstone make for a formidable pair of opponents.” But New York Daily News‘ Joe Neumaier said, “Had the film stood still more often, its stylish gambit would have worked better.”
With this calibre of cast and writer/director, we think the movie’s worth a look.
The DVD and Blu-ray offer just one special feature, a making-of featurette.
Here’s the trailer, which looks pretty good:
