The description for thriller movie Retreat reads like Dead Calm on land.
In 1989’s Dead Calm, husband and wife Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole) and Sam Neill (Daybreakers) were enjoying some alone time on their yacht when injured Billy Zane (Sniper Reloaded) washed up, saying he’s from another ship that wrecked. Tension builds as the couple tries to figure out the truth and save themselves.
In 2011’s Retreat, husband and wife Thandie Newton (For Colored Girls) and Cillian Murphy (In Time) are enjoying some alone time on an island retreat — trying to save their marriage after it was torn apart by the stress of the stillbirth of their first child — when injured Jamie Bell (Jane Eyre) washes up, saying he’s the lone survivor of an airborne killer disease that’s sweeping across Europe. Tensions build as the couple tries to figure out the truth and save themselves.
Retreat was screened in a handful of theaters in the U.S., getting a bigger run overseas, and was generally liked by critics. But what they applauded the most was the acting, and that’s to be expected with the likes of Newton, Murphy and Bell on the screen.
From Britain’s Empire magazine: “Excellent performances from the cast elevate this otherwise slightly flawed and hokey interloper story.”
And This Is London‘s Derek Malcolm wrote of the film: “A well-shot and directed telling of a claustrophobic tale which turns from thriller to horror story by the end. Only if you can’t suspend your disbelief will it fail to keep you watching.”
