In his 2011 science-fiction-tinged drama Melancholia, Danish bad boy filmmaker Lars von Trier (Antichrist) takes on nothing less than love, death, family, relationships, expectations, tradition, depression and, oh yes, the destruction of our planet.
And he does all that to critical acclaim, a solid box-office response and award recognition at the Cannes Film Festival! Not bad…
The story of Melancholia centers on the wedding celebration of newly married couple Justine (Kirsten Dunst, All Good Things) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård, TV’s True Blood), taking place at the house of the bride’s sister Claire (Charlotte Gainsbourg, The City of Your Final Destination) and brother-in-law John (Keifer Sutherland, TV’s 24). Despite Claire’s best efforts, the wedding is a fiasco, with family tensions mounting and relationships reaching their breaking points. Meanwhile, at the same time, a deadly planet called “Melancholia,” is hurtling towards Earth and threatening its ultimate destruction.
Dunst picked up Best Actress awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association for her performance in the movie, which appeared on a slew of Top Ten Film lists in 2011, including those in The New York Times and The Village Voice.
The Blu-ray and DVD include the following bonus features:
- “Making of Melancholia” featurette
- “Behind the Scenes of Melancholia”
- Interviews
