One of three Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) movies that arrived in theaters in 2011, Haywire is the first starring role of Gina Carano, also known as mixed martial arts fighter Crush on American Gladiators.
The action thriller film tells the story of Mallory Kane (Carano), a black-ops agent for a government security contractor (Ewan McGregor, The Island). After going on a mission to rescue a Chinese journalist who was being held hostage, Kane is double-crossed and left for dead. So she goes on the run, revealing everything she has been doing to a hostage (Michael Angarano, The Art of Getting By) she picked up at a diner, while she tries to trap the people who set her up.
With Soderbergh at the helm, it’s no wonder that Haywire is filled with name actors, including Michael Douglas (Disclosure), Michael Fassbender (Shame), Antonio Banderas (The Skin I Live In), Bill Paxton (Tombstone) and Channing Tatum (The Dilemma).
Like one of Soderbergh’s other 2011 movies, Contagion, Haywire was liked by critics far more than by audience members. Although critics gave it 80% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, audience members rated it at a low 42%. And word must have gotten out, because the film grossed a poor $18.8 million when it was in wide release in theaters.
The Blu-ray and DVD come with just two special features:
- a behind-the-scenes featurette looking at Carano’s move from MMA to film
- a featurette about the men of Haywire.
The Blu-ray also comes with a downloadable digital copy of the film.
