Drew Barrymore (Charlie’s Angels) and John Krasinski (TV’s The Office) have a big problem in Big Miracle, the 2012 drama movie that’s based on a true story.
In the family film, Barrymore plays Rachel Kramer, a former Greenpeace volunteer, and Krasinski is small-town reporter Adam Carlson. When three whales are trapped by rapidly forming ice in the Artic Circle, Kramer and Carlson convince Alaskan natives, oil tycoons and the Russian and American military to free the whales, if they can stop disagreeing.
Directed by Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You), Big Miracle also stars Kristen Bell (When in Rome), Dermot Mulroney (J. Edgar), Tim Blake Nelson (O Brother Where Art Thou?) and Ted Danson (TV’s Bored to Death).
The movie grossed a not impressive $20 million at the box office. But critics gave it praise when it was in theaters, so it’s one to check out on DVD and Blu-ray.
Both the DVD and Blu-ray contain these special features:
- deleted scenes with introductions by Kwapis
- featurette “Truth is Stranger Than Fiction” about the real stories that inspired the film, including interviews with the cast and crew as well as people involved in the true events in 1988
- feature commentary with Kwapis.
Exclusive to the Blu-ray are:
- behind-the-scenes featurette “A Big Miracle in Alaska” about the challenges and joys of shooting in Alaska
- UltraViolet, allowing viewers to stream the movie on computers, tablets and smart phones
- downloadable digital copy of the film
- BD-Live
- Pocket Blu app, allowing smart phones to interact with Blu-ray players.
- UHear, allowing users to skip back a few seconds if they miss a line of dialog.
