Kino Lorber’s Lina Wertmüller Collection is a three-DVD anthology of politically charged comedy and drama films by the noted Italian filmmaker: The Seduction of Mimi (1972), Love & Anarchy (1973) and All Screwed Up (1974)
During the Seventies, Wertmüller was considered to be one of the most politically outspoken and iconoclastic members of the second generation of Italy’s postwar directors. She was also one of the first female directors to win international recognition and acclaim, becoming the first woman to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for her 1975 movie Seven Beauties.
The Seduction of Mimi (1972): Taking aim at a corrupt government, compromised labor leaders and the sexual politics of men in power, this comedy-satire looks at a Sicilian laborer, Mimi (Giancarlo Giannini) who abandons his family when he is forced to flee from the Mafia. Upon arriving in Milan, he falls in love with a hippie radical (Mariangela Melato) and his pulled into the far left of a political struggle he doesn’t quite understand.
Love & Anarchy (1973): This tragedy-comedy is set in pre-WWII fascist Italy, where the employees of a popular Roman bordello realize that a new arrival (Giancarlo Giannini) is planning to kill Mussolini. When one of the bordello’s girls (Lina Polito) falls in love with the would-be assassin, she’s torn between saving him and saving her country.
All Screwed Up (1974): A farcical comedy-drama, All Screwed Up presents the misadventures of a group of young misplaced immigrants who work in a kitchen in restaurant in Milan.
There are no bonus features on the DVDs for the three films, which are all presented in Italian with English subtitles.
All three titles–The Seduction of Mimi, Love & Anarchy and All Screwed Up–are available individually on Blu-ray for $29.95 each.
