The Five Year Engagement movie scene

Jason Segel and Emily Blunt almost get married in The Five-Year Engagement.

From the team of director Nicholas Stoller and mega-producer Judd Apatow (the pair are responsible for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek) comes the romantic comedy The Five-Year Engagement, starring Jason Segel (The Muppets) and Emily Blunt (The Adjustment Bureau).

Tom (Segel), a sous chef at a fancy restaurant, and Violet (Blunt), a psychology PhD graduate, are a happy couple in San Francisco who get engaged a year after they began dating. Their nuptials get interrupted when Tom’s best friend Alex (Chris Pratt, Moneyball) gets Violet’s sister Suzie (Alison Brie, TV’s Community) pregnant and the two marry before Tom and Violet. The delay continues when Violet gets accepted to a post-doctorate program in Michigan and Tom agrees to give up his job and move there with her.

Needless to say, even more complications—including a break-up and new lovers—add to what ultimately turns into the titular engagement scenario!

An appealing performance by the two leads (particularly Apatow regular Segel) and some solid laughs didn’t deliver spectacular box office returns for The Five year Engagement when it opened in U.S. theaters in April, 2012. It tapped out at about $27 million.

The Five-Year Engagement Blu-ray and DVD include both the theatrical R-rated version of the film, along with a saucier unrated version that adds seven additional minutes to the running time.

The film will most likely find a stronger audience on disc, where it also contains a slew of solid bonus materials, including the following:

  • Feature Commentary: Featuring director/writer/producer Nicholas Stoller, producer Rodney Rothman, writer/star Jason Segel, and stars Emily Blunt, Chris Pratt, and Alison Brie.
  • Deleted, extended and alternative scenes
  • Gag reel
  • Line-o-rama
  • Experiment-o-rama
  • Weird Winton: Marvel at Winton Child’s bizarre chants, poses and other hilarious mannerisms, featuring Jason Segel, Emily Blunt and Rhys Ifans.
  • Making of featurette (BD only)
  • Gastrocule: The Making of (BD only)
  • Turkey: The Making of (BD only)
  • Gonorrhea Trouble: George explains to Violet why he split with her mum in these outtakes, featuring Emily Blunt, Jim Piddock and Jacki Weaver. (BD only)
  • Top Chef: Alex Eilhauer: Alex Eilhauer joins the prestigious panel of judges on this irreverent segment of “Top Chef,” featuring Chris Pratt, Emeril Lagasse, Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio. (BD only)
