Not to be confused with Disney’s sweet story, Snow White and the Huntsman honors the spirit of the original fairy tale with a twist. And on DVD and Blu-ray, it comes in an extended edition.
The Twilight Saga‘s Kristen Stewart plays the doomed princess, who’s imprisoned in a tower after her father is killed. Charlize Theron (Young Adult) ratchets up her evil side as the stepmother, who has a reason for being so mean in this version. And when Snow White escapes, Theron’s Ravenna sends the Chris Hemsworth (Thor) to find her as he’s the best huntsman in the village. But he has ideas of his own. Of course, Snow White gets help from the dwarfs, including Bob Hoskins (Made in Dagenham), Ray Winstone (Hugo), Ian McShane (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides), Eddie Marsan (War Horse) and Nick Frost (Paul).
First-time director Rupert Sanders helmed the PG-13-rated film, which grossed a tidy $153 million in U.S. theaters.
Although Snow White and the Huntsman got mixed reviews from critics and moviegoers, the movie was hailed for its stylish looks. More of that will be seen in the extended edition on DVD and Blu-ray, but only four minutes more. The extended version of the film runs 132 minutes, as opposed to 128 minutes for the theatrical version, which also is on the discs.
