Hollywood’s reboot of the science-fiction comic book franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man shows the superhero closer to his roots.
Played by Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) in the movie, Peter Parker is back in high school, a science geek who, after he gets bitten by the spider — of course — finds a way to weave his own super strong webs to help his transformation into Spider-Man.
Emma Stone (The Help) plays Parker’s high school crush, Gwen Stacy, science geek herself and daughter of police Captain Denis Leary (TV’s Rescue Me). And Martin Sheen (Wall Street) and Sally Field (TV’s Brothers & Sisters) take over the roles of Parker’s Uncle Ben and Aunt May.
When a giant lizard starts terrorizing the city, Parker has a theory that it’s tied to research his scientist father (Campbell Scott, TV’s Royal Pains) was doing before he disappeared. Which leads him to suspect Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans, Anonymous), his father’s former partner and Gwen’s intern boss.
Whoever the monster is, Spider-Man is the only hope to stop it.
Directed by Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer), The Amazing Spider-Man grossed $260 million at the box office, a tidy sum for a big budget movie, but not as huge as any of the earlier films starring Tobey Maguire (Pleasantville) and Kirsten Dunst (Melancholia). Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 took in $403.7 million, $373.6 million and $336.5 million, respectively.
Perhaps the reboot was just too soon — Spider-Man 3 was only released five years earlier — because Amazing was well liked by critics and moviegoers. As The Atlantic critic Christopher Orr said, “The Amazing Spider-Man is considerably more fun — and, yes, even touching — than so premature a reboot had any right to be.” We at Disc Dish were pleasantly surprised by the freshness of the film’s story.
All disc versions of the movie offer a downloadable digital copy of the film and instant streaming through UltraViolet. Plus, each disc set has a horde of special features.
The three-disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack (two Blu-ray discs and one DVD) has those plus:
And the four-disc Blu-ray 3D Combo pack has all those extras as well as “3D Film School With Marc Webb,” which takes viewers through the 3D techniques and allows them to toggle through three scenes from the movie at different levels of 3D. As well as the Blu-ray 3D disc, the combo contains two Blu-ray discs and a DVD.
The Limited Edition Gift Set contains the four-disc Blu-ray 3D Combo packaged with collectible Spider-Man and Lizard figurines.
