It’s wonderful to see the 1989 Academy Award-winning movie Driving Miss Daisy get its debut on high-definition Blu-ray.
The drama film, which took home four Oscars, stars Morgan Freeman (Seven), Jessica Tandy (Fried Green Tomatoes) and Dan Aykroyd (The Blues Brothers) in a story about love and respect overcoming issues of race.
Tandy plays Miss Daisy Werthan, an eldery Jewish woman living in 1950s Atlanta. Despite her protests, her son (Aykroyd) hires black man Hoke Colburn (Freeman) to be her driver. Hoke slowly wins over Miss Daisy with his patience and politeness. Over the years, the relationship between Miss Daisy and Hoke builds beyond the race problems in the American South.
The PG-rated movie is based on the play by Alfred Uhry, who also wrote the film’s Oscar-winning screenplay. Bruce Beresford (Mao’s Last Dancer) directed the movie.
Driving Miss Daisy also won Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Makeup and Best Actress for Tandy, and was nominated for Best Actor (Freeman), Best Supporting Actor (Aykroyd), Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design and Best Film Editing.
The Blu-ray Book contains a new featurette, commentary, vintage documentaries and, of course, the book: a new 32-page book with behind-the-scenes insights, production notes, photos, bios and more.
