Ten years since the first movie hit theaters, the science-fiction franchise continues with the fifth theatrical film Resident Evil: Retribution.
Despite recurring star Milla Jovovich’s (The Three Musketeers) best efforts to hit them where it hurts, the Umbrella Corporation still controls the population by transferring humans into flesh-eating undead. Jovovich’s Alice is captured by the Umbrella Corporation and learns more about her mysterious past. With help from new and past allies, Alice goes from Tokyo to New York, Washington D.C. and Moscow to hunt those responsible.
Sienna Guillroy (Resident Evil: Afterlife), Kevin Durand (Real Steel) and, returning for the first time since the original film, Michelle Rodriguez (Battle: Los Angeles) also star in the R-rated movie. Paul W.S. Anderson (Soldier) also returns as the writer/director, after writing all five movies and helming the original and 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife.
Resident Evil: Retribution grossed $42 million in theaters, less than the last three films but more than the original. The movie didn’t score well with critics, but neither did any of the other films in the franchise. Retribution was called “thuddingly awful” by New York Daily News‘ Joe Neumaier. Ouch!
Still, the DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D versions all carry special features. On the DVD:
- director and cast commentary
- director and producer commentary
- outtakes
- featurette “Drop (Un)Dead: The Creatures of Retribution“
The Blu-ray versions have those plus these:
- deleted and extended scenes
- “Project Alice: The Interactive Database,” a map where viewers can investigate the living, dead and undead of the Resident Evil universe
- and six featurettes:
- “Maestro of Evil: Directing Resident Evil: Retribution” with Anderson discussing his return to the franchise
- “Evolving Alice” about how Jovovich and Anderson continue the character’s story
- “Resident Evil: Reunion” with the original cast favorites, including Oded Fehr (TV’s Covert Affairs) and Rodriguez
- “Design & Build: The World of Resident Evil: Retribution” about how the filmmakers recreated the set and filming locations
- “Resident Stuntman,” featuring filmmakers and stunt coordinator Nick Powell talking about some of the action sequences in the movie
- and “Code: Mika” about Japanese pop star Mika Nakashima, who reprises her role as J-Pop Girl in the film.
On the Blu-ray 3D Combo, as well as the movie, the outtakes and deleted and extended scenes are also in 3D.
All three versions also offer instant streaming of Resident Evil: Retribution through UltraViolet.
