The 1986 romantic comedy-drama Hannah and Her Sisters and the 1973 comedy Sleeper are generally considered to be two of filmmaker Woody Allen’s (You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger) finer efforts of the 40-plus movies he’s made over the past four decades.
The winner of three Academy Awards (including Michael Caine for Best Supporting Actor, Dianne Wiest for Best Supporting Actress and Woody himself for Best Screenplay), Hannah and Her Sisters spins a delicious tale about the lives and loves of three sisters in New York City. Woody also co-stars in the ensemble, along with Mia Farrow (Rosemary’s Baby), Max Von Sydow (The Magician), Barbara Hershey (Black Swan) and Carrie Fisher (Wishful Drinking).
Sleeper stars Woody as Mile Monroe, a health food store owner from 1970s New York who is cryogenically preserved and then awakened 200 years in the future following a hospital mishap. The neurotic Miles quickly discovers that the future isn’t all the bright: all women are frigid, all men are impotent, and the world is run as a police state ruled by an evil dictator…who’s become a disembodied nose! Co-starring Diane Keaton (Morning Glory), Sleeper brims with loony sight gags and Alice-in-Wonderland illogic, drawing on the great physical tradition of silent comedy and the timeless power of satirical skewering.
As is the case with the majority of Woody Allen films on disc (both titles have been available on DVD for years), the Blu-ray debuts of the PG-rated Sleeper and the PG-13-rated Hannah do not include any bonus features.
For those looking for something a little more recent from the Woodman, Sony will release Blu-ray and DVD editions of Woody’s latest film, 2012’s To Rome With Love, on January 15, as well.
