British horror legends Christopher Lee (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) and the late Peter Cushing (Star Wars: Episode IV- A New Hope) star in the 1970 British horror film The House That Dripped Blood, which has long been out-of-print on DVD.
Here’s the set-up: A Scotland Yard Inspector’s (John Holloway) search for a missing film star (John Pertwee) leads him to a haunted house. The house sets the framework for four separate tales of terror.
All four stories center on the mysterious fates of tenants who have leased the mansion over the years: A writer’s murderous creation comes to life; a wax figure leads to a fatal argument between two men; a young girl becomes obsessed with witchcraft; and a film star buys a cape that adds more than he expects to his portrayal of a vampire.
The quartet of tales are written by Robert Bloch, who’s best remembered for his novel Psycho, upon which the Hitchcock classic is based.
Directed by Peter Duffell, the PG-rated film also stars sexy British horror film stalwart Ingrid Pitt, Denholm Elliott, Joss Ackland and Chloe Franks.
You gotta love those British horror omnibus films! We’ve never seen this one, but if it’s anything like Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965) with Lee or Tales from the Crypt (1972) with Cushing, then we’re in!
Check out this vintage trailer, which boasts the film contains “Vampires! Voodoo! Vixens! Victims!”
