Bruce Willis (Looper), Catherine Zeta-Jones (Rock of Ages), Rebecca Hall (The Town) and Joshua Jackson (TV’s Dawson’s Creek) star in the little-seen 2012 comedy Lay the Favorite.
Professional odds-maker Dink (Willis) is running a small-time sports gambling enterprise when a former stripper named Beth (Hall) promises to help him score big — and turns his world upside down. With his connections and her knack for numbers, the lucrative business of sports betting will never be the same.
Directed by Stephen Frears (High Fidelity) and also featuring Laura Prepon (TV’s Are You There, Chelsea…?), Vince Vaughn (The Dilemma), Wendell Pierce (TV’s Treme) and Corbin Bernsen (Bad Actress) in the ensemble cast, Lay the Favorite is based on Beth Raymer’s 2012 memoir-styled exposé of the world of gambling Lay the Favorite: A Story About Gamblers.
The R-rated movie received a limited release to U.S. theaters in December, 2012 following a handful of theatrical bookings across Europe earlier in the year. It didn’t fare to well among the critics and at the box office in the U.S., where it grossed $21,000 on 612 screens during its one-and-only theatrical weekend.
This one cost a reported $26 million to produce…yikes..and it boasts one of the more colorful casts of the year. So we’ve got to ask: What happened? And how bad could it be? The trailer actually looks pretty good…:
