Aaron Paul (TV’s Breaking Bad) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) star in the 2012 independent drama Smashed.
Kate (Winstead) and Charlie (Paul) are a young married couple whose bond is built on a mutual love of music, laughter and lots of alcohol. When Kate’s drinking leads her to dangerous places and her teaching job is put in jeopardy, she decides to join AA and get sober. With the help of her friends and sponsor Jenny (Spencer), Kate takes steps toward improving her health and life. But sobriety isn’t as easy as Kate has anticipated, as her new lifestyle forces her to confront a troubling relationship with her mother (Place), face the lies she’s told her employer, and question whether or not her relationship with Charlie is built on love or if it’s just a boozy diversion from adulthood.
Smashed was directed and co-written by James Ponsoldt and co-stars Nick Offerman (TV’s Parks & Recreation), Megan Mullally (TV’s Will & Grace), Mary Kay Place (Youth in Revolt) and Octavia Spencer (The Help).
Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and positively received by the critics, the R-rated Smashed had a limited run on U.S. theaters screens in October, 2012, where it rang up $380,000.
