Brad Pitt (Moneyball) partners with writer-director Andrew Dominik again in thriller movie Killing Them Softly, their second venture after the acclaimed The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
Based on the novel by George V. Higgins, Killing Them Softly stars Pitt as a hit man who’s hired to send a message and restore order after three idiots rob a Mob card game.
Pitt’s Jackie gets his orders from the Mob’s suit, Driver (Richard Jenkins, Let Me In), who fingers mobster Markie Trattman (Ray Liotta, Something Wild) as a possible suspect. But when others (Scott McNairy of Argo, Ben Mendelsohn of The Dark Knight Rises) come into the picture, Pitt hires alcoholic hit man Mickey (James Gandolfini, Welcome to the Rileys) to help out, as long as his depression doesn’t get in the way.
Sam Shepard (Safe House) also stars in this R-rated crime movie, which grossed a not so hot $15 million in theaters.
Critics loved Killing Them Softly, with The Atlantic‘s Christopher Orr calling it “stylish, profane, intelligent and eminently diverting.”
Audiences didn’t give the film as much appreciation, rating it at 50% instead of the 75% approval critics gave it. Perhaps they agreed with critic Richard Roeper, who said, “Killing Them Softly collapses under the crushing weight of the director’s narcissism.” We at Disc Dish agree. While the movie has some great moments and funny parts, it’s also slow and convoluted.
The Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack contains these special features:
- deleted scenes
- and “The Making of Killing Them Softly.”
