With biography movie Lincoln, winner of two Academy Awards, director Steven Spielberg continues his love of historical films following Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan and War Horse, to name a few.
Lincoln examines the time of the former American president’s life when he tried to permanently abolish slavery.
Lush and rich, the film will perhaps be best known for its stunning, and Oscar-winning, performance by Daniel Day-Lewis (Nine) as Abraham Lincoln. Day-Lewis was called “mesmerizing” by Denver Post critic Lisa Kennedy. “Lincoln offers proof of what magic can happen when an actor falls in love with his character. Because as great as Day-Lewis has been in his many parts, he has never seemed quite so smitten.”
Day-Lewis is surrounded by an equally impressive cast, including the irrepressible Sally Field (The Amazing Spider-Man), David Strathairn (TV’s Alphas), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper), James Spader (Secretary), Hal Holbrook (Promised Land), Tommy Lee Jones (Men in Black 3), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen) and Tim Blake Nelson (Big Miracle). And the movie features a score by the brilliant John Williams (The Adventures of Tintin).
As well as Day-Lewis, critics lauded the PG-13 film for its costumes and Spielberg’s direction. MSN Movies‘ Glenn Kenny called Lincoln, which grossed $180 million in theaters, “the most remarkable movie Steven Spielberg has made in quite a spell.”
While we at Disc Dish agree, we’ll also add that the film is at time oppressively slow and convoluted. Beautiful, yes, but also loooong. So be prepared: If you’re not a lover of history, you might want to have the fast-forward button close by.
Lincoln is available on DVD and in two different Blu-ray sets: a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD pack and a four-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo. All share the featurette “The Journey to Lincoln,” with Spielberg and his partners talking about the challenges of bringing the president’s story to the screen.
The two-disc Blu-ray set also includes the featurette “A Historic Tapestry: Richmond, Virginia,” with Spielberg and his team discussing why they chose to shoot in Virginia.
The four-disc set has the bulk of the extras, carrying those plus:
- “In the Company of Character,” about Day-Lewis’ portrayal of Lincoln
- “Crafting the Past,” about the production design — the movie’s other Oscar winner — costume and makeup that helped recreate Lincoln’s era
- “Living With Lincoln,” following Spielberg, the cast and crew through the shooting of the movie
- and “In Lincoln’s Footsteps,” about the film’s editing, sound design and Williams’ score, as well as how Lincoln’s legacy continues to be relevant and inspiring today
- downloadable digital copy of the movie.
