Executive producer Queen Latifah (Just Wright) and Lifetime brought us a new version of Steel Magnolias in 2012, this time with an all-black cast.
The story is the same: Six Southern women who congregate at Truvy’s Beauty Spot support each other as they face life’s difficulties, including the unwise pregnancy of diabetic Shelby (Condola Rashad, TV’s Smash).
In this version, the 1989 version’s Julia Roberts is swapped with Rashad, Sally Field is swapped with Latifah, Dolly Parton (Joyful Noise) with Jill Scott (Why Did I Get Married Too?), Shirley MacLaine (Bernie) with Alfre Woodard (TV’s True Blood), Daryl Hannah (Kill Bill) with Adepero Oduye (Pariah) and Olympia Dukakis (Moonstruck) with Phylicia Rashad (TV’s Do No Harm).
Reviews were mixed for Latifah’s Steel Magnolias, with many saying it’s an uninspired copy of the 1989 film version. (A remake also was made by CBS and aired in 1990 as a TV pilot, but the show didn’t go any further.)
The DVD doesn’t have any special features, except instant streaming via UltraViolet.
