Another young adult book series made its debut on the big screen with Beautiful Creatures.

Based on the novels by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, the fantasy movie tells the story of Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich, Stoker) and Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert, In Fear). Ethan wants to escape his small town of Gatlin, which he thinks is boring and dead end. His view changes when Lena moves to Gatlin, but she has secrets, namely strange powers that have kept her at a distance from other people in her life.

As Lena and Ethan are drawn together, their romance is threatened, however. Lena’s a Caster and her family has Dark powers. And on her 16th birthday, Lena must do the Claiming, which will decide her fate between Light or Dark.

Rated PG-13, Beautiful Creatures also stars Jeremy Irons (The Words), Viola Davis (The Help) and Emma Thompson (Men in Black 3).

Despite the love fans have for the book, the romance film didn’t come close to the phenomenon that Twilight became, grossing $19 million in theaters. The lack of audience attention could have been because of the movie’s reviews, which were more on the negative than positive. Twilight paved the way for that too, but Times-Picayune critic Mike Scott said of Beautiful Creatures: “Trying to become the next Twilight, it is a better film in most respects than any entry in that franchise – although that’s damning it with faint praise.” Indeed.
