After Twilight came the movie adaptation of novelist Stephenie Meyer‘s The Host, a sort of Invasion of the Body Snatchers romance for teens.
The science-fiction film stars Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) as Melanie Stryder, who must risk everything to protect the people she loves after an unseen enemy threatens to take over human bodies and erase their memories.
Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Max Irons (Red Riding Hood), William Hurt (Broadcast News), Frances Fisher (Titanic), Chandler Canterbury (Repo Men) and Jake Abel (I Am Number Four) also star in The Host, which was written and directed by Andrew Niccol (In Time).
The Host did not impress critics at all, who gave it only 9% approval, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Moviegoers liked it better, but only to 54%. Bad reviews kept interest low at the box office, not even attracting Meyer’s Twilight fans. The film earned $26 million in theaters.
If you try it on DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo, you’ll also get these special features:
- deleted scenes
- behind-the-scenes featurette “Bringing The Host to Life,” including interviews with Meyer, Ronan, Irons and Abel
- “Seeker PSA” feature commentary with Meyer, Niccol and producer Nick Wechsler.
- The Blu-ray/DVD Combo also offers digital download and streaming of the film via UltraViolet.
