Admission stars two comedy heavy-hitters, Tina Fey (TV’s 30 Rock) and Paul Rudd (Wanderlust). It’s too bad critics didn’t see the humor.
In the movie, Fey plays Portia Nathan, a Princeton admissions officer who lives her life by the book. During her annual recruiting trip, however, she reconnects with a former classmate, free-spirited teacher John Pressman (Rudd).
As she bends the entrance rules for one of his unconventional students, she puts everything she thought she wanted at risk but also find a surprising and exhilarating life she never dreamed of.
Michael Sheen (Tron Legacy), Lily Tomlin (TV’s Damages), Wallace Shawn (TV’s Gossip Girl) and Gloria Reuben (Lincoln) also star in the PG-13 romantic comedy.
Written by Karen Croner from the novel by Jean Hanff Korelitz, Admission was helmed by director Paul Weitz, who brought us the brilliant About a Boy but also the not so brilliant Little Fockers.
Critics were mixed about the movie. New Yorker critic Richard Brody called it an “overstuffed romantic comedy,” but MSN Movies‘ Glenn Kenny wrote, “If Fey ends up making movies as good as this one over the next few years, television’s loss will have been cinema’s gain.”
Perhaps scared off by the reviews, moviegoers took Admission to only $17.9 million, much less than Fey’s last movie, Date Night, which grossed a tidy $98 million.
As of this writing, Universal hadn’t announced any special features for the DVD and Blu-ray, but the Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack does come with digital copy and instant streaming through UltraViolet, redeemable by April 30, 2015.
