Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy), Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga) and Sam Riley (Byzantium) star in the 2012 film drama On the Road, adapted from Jack Kerouac‘s revered 1957 novel of the same name.
Set in the late 1950s, On the Road tells the story of Sal Paradise (Riley), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of charming, free-spirited ex-con Dean Moriarty (Hedlund) and his girl, Marylou (Stewart). Traveling cross-country, the new friends venture out on a personal quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of the pure essence of experience. Seeking uncharted terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounters an eclectic mix of men and women who each indelibly impact their journey toward self-discovery.
Directed by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries), the film co-stars Viggo Mortensen (The Road), Kirsten Dunst (All Good Things), Amy Adams (The Master), and Elisabeth Moss (TV’s Mad Men),
Nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the R-rated movie enjoyed a limited release to theaters in December, 2012 to generally positive reviews, with Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times writing that “Salles has lovingly crafted a poetic, sensitive, achingly romantic version of the Kerouac book.” The film ultimately rang up but a disappointing domestic gross of less than $1 million at the box office.
Bonus features on the disc include a selection of deleted scenes.
