A scimitar-wielding Kali makes her move in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad.

Twilight Time honoring the inimitable stop-motion animation special effects of the late Ray Harryhausen with the first time Blu-ray release of a pair of Harryhausen-infused family-friendly Sinbad adventure films from the 1970s, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1973) and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger (1977).

In The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, Harryhausen gives us another installment in the adventures of the swashbuckling sailor Sinbad (John Phillip Law), who is  pitted against a nefarious master of the black arts (Tom Baker, TV’s Doctor Who) as the two race to find a magical treasure trove. Over the course of the film, Sinbad confronts a host of astonishing Harryhausen creatures, including a wee-winged homunculus, a one-eyed centaur, and the six-armed, scimitar-wielding deity Kali. Directed by Gordon Hessler, the film co-stars Caroline Munroe and includes a score by the great Miklos Rozsa (Ben-Hur), which will be featured on the Twilight Time release as an isolated track.

The third entry in Harryhausen’s trilogy of films about the legendary sailor (following Golden Voyage and 1958’s The 7th Voyage of Sinbad), Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger tells the tale of Sinbad’s (Patrick Wayne) quest to return the brother of his beloved Princess Farah (Jane Seymour, Somewhere in Time) to manhood after an evil witch (Margaret Whiting) turns him into a baboon. Along for the ride are a magician (Patrick Troughton, the second Doctor Who) and his beauteous daughter (Taryn Power), allo of whom get caught up in a journey that features encounters with such Harryhausen creations as a giant hornet, a golden minotaur, a mammoth walrus, a troglodyte, a saber-tooth tiger and a trio of demonoids.

As supplier Twilight Time prints up only 3,000 copies of each title, be prepared to pre-order this one directly from distributor Screen Archives. The prebook date hasn’t been announced yet, but we’re assuming it’ll be in or around mid-November.
