With the new live-action Green Lantern starring Ryan Reynolds (Buried) flying into theaters on June 17, 2011, Warner Home Video cashed in on the excitement with the DVD and Blu-ray release of animated movie Green Lantern: Emerald Knights on June 7.
The discs include an anthology of six Green Lantern stories, showing Hal Jordan and the superheros policing the galaxy. Jordan, the character played by Reynolds in the live-action movie, is voiced by Nathan Fillion (TV’s Castle), and the show also features the voices of Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Elisabeth Moss (TV’s Mad Men), Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy Returns) and Henry Rollins (TV’s Sons of Anarchy).
For animated superhero programs, PG-rated Green Lantern: Emerald Knights has the pedigree of being produced by Bruce Timm, who also produced the animated superhero movies Batman: Gotham Knight, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and 2009’s Green Lantern: First Flight. In other words, he knows his stuff.
Here’s what Timm told MTV about the new Green Lantern feature: “This one focuses directly on the other members of the Green Lantern Corps,” he explained. “It’s similar in format to the Batman: Gotham Knight movie we did a couple of years ago, with six individual stories all tied up in an overall arc. [Emerald Knights] is similar in that each of the individual stories focuses on one of the other Green Lanterns.”
Warner packed the Emerald Knights Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with special features:
- sneak peek at upcoming DC Universe animated movie
- sneak peek at All-Star Superman
- featurette: “Only the Bravest: Tales of The Green Lantern Corps”
- featurette: “Why Green Lantern Matters: The Talent of Geoff Johns”
- commentary with Dan DiDio and Geoff Johns
- pod: “From Comic Book to Screen: Abin Sur”
- pod: “From Comic Book to Screen: Laira Omoto,” which takes a peek into Geoff John’s Green Lantern Secret Origin book, which for the first time, showed fans what really happened to Abin Sur before he crashed landed on Earth, and passed on his ring to Hal Jordan.
- Bruce Timm’s Picks:
– excerpt from “The Siege of Starro! Part One” from Batman: The Brave and The Bold
– “Revenge of The Reach!” from Batman: The Brave and The Bold - digital comic: Green Lantern
The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack was priced at $24.98.
The DVD, priced at $19.98, only includes the sneak peeks of the upcoming DC Universe animated movie and All-Star Superman.
