In November, ABC Television’s wildly popular action crime drama series The Mod Squad, which ran for five seasons from 1968 through 1973, will be issued in a 39-disc, complete series DVD collection for the first time ever.
The show revolved around three youthful and very cool investigators – Julie (Peggy Lipton), Pete (Michael Cole) and Linc (Clarence Williams III) – who solved crimes, apprehended heinous criminals and addressed social injustice. Being products of the flower-child era, they didn’t carry guns (or make the ultimate arrests), but instead wore beads and mod clothing, peppering their dialogue with slang of the day – like “groovy,” “keep the faith” and “solid” – all backed by a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack.
Led by the straight-laced, frequently perturbed Captain Adam Greer (Tige Andrews), the show portrayed a multi-cultural society, dealing with such controversial issues as racial politics, drug culture, anti-war sentiment, soldiers returning from war, student unrest, abortion, spousal abuse, child neglect, illiteracy and slum lords …
Available on DVD as a full collector’s set for the first time, The Mod Squad was executive produced by Aaron Spelling and Danny Thomas and featured guest appearances by such stars of the era as Yvonne Craig (Batman’s “Bat Girl”) and Carolyn Jones (The Addams Family’s “Morticia”), along with such “up-and-comers” Sammy Davis Jr., Robert Duvall, Louis Gossett Jr., Richard Pryor, Martin Sheen, Richard Dreyfuss and Leslie Ann Warren.
The Mod Squad: Complete Collection is presented in full screen with an aspect ratio of 4.3 and digital sound. Special features in the collection include “Forming the Squad,” “Inside the Teeth of the Barracuda: 1968,” “Friends of The Mod Squad” and “Hello, My Name is Julie: The Mod Look” featurettes.
The collection is available directly from VEI at the discounted price of $129.99 at the VEI homepage (link).
