Rocky might have all the fame and glory, but Chuck is where the boxing-movie Cinderella story began.

Chuck starring Liev Schreiber and Ron Perlman
Chuck starring Liev Schreiber and Ron Perlman

The biopic Chuck tells the story of the man who inspired Sylvester Stallone’s multi-award-winning movie: Chuck Wepner. Known as “The Bayonne Bleeder” because of the amount of times he bled in the ring, Chuck Wepner is a New Jersey boxer who, in 1975, was trying to make ends meet when he was given the chance for a title fight against Muhammad Ali. He went up against the best, and although he didn’t win, was lauded for going the distance, falling only seconds shy of the full fifteen rounds. Sound familiar?

Unlike Rocky, Chuck had a wife and daughter when he was given the chance to fight Ali. He also had a penchant for other women and drugs, which caused friction in his family and life. Like Rocky, he’s just trying to get ahead, but his path isn’t as rosy as his movie counterpart’s.

Chuck Wepner is played admirably by Liev Schreiber, who had an obvious passion for the role and, perhaps, empathy for this flawed but likable character. While Schreiber carries the weight of the story, the movie is speckled with other great performances, including The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Elisabeth Moss as Chuck’s wife, Ron Perlman (TV’s Hand of God) as his coach and manager, and Michael Rapaport (TV’s Justified) as his stepped-on brother. It’s also great to see comedian Jim Gaffigan playing a slightly more serious role as Chuck’s loyal friend John. Naomi Watts (3 Generations) rounds out the cast playing the brilliantly mouthy Linda.

The movie is a little uneven in places, but it packs in a lot. As Chuck tries to sort out his life, he’s faced with pseudo-celebrity status from his Ali fight and feelings of seeing your story on the big screen. And he deals with all of it by jumping from one destructive behavior to another.

Still, Chuck is a solid movie that those interested in boxing as well as Rocky fans will enjoy.

The Blu-ray comes with one quick featurette that’s a nice addition to the movie. In it, Liev Schreiber discusses his respect for the real Chuck Wepner, giving a little insight into the man himself. It would’ve been nice to see an interview with the Bayonne Bleeder, though.

Captain FantasticIt’s a shame that Captain Fantastic was released in only a limited number of theaters. The movie is simply one of the best indie films released this year.

Headlined by a strong but subtle performance from Viggo Mortensen (A Dangerous Method), Captain Fantastic tells the story of Ben (Mortensen), a father who’s raising his six children in the woods, on the land, away from society. When he finds out his mentally ill wife just died after being in the hospital, the family take a road trip to stop the burial and fulfill the children’s mother’s true wishes of cremation.

The movie is part road trip, part family drama, part comedy, but through it all is an exploration of the tug and pull that many parents face when raising their children, between protecting them from the harsher realities of the world and feeding them into the consumer-obsessed, politically correct society norms.

Ben’s family’s out-of-society life hits viewers squarely across the head in the opening scene, when the eldest son Bo (George MacKay, How I Live Now) kills a deer with his hands and a knife then eats the raw liver as his father tells him he’s now a man. This might sound offputting, and it was to me, frankly, but let’s face it: When you’re living on the land, you catch what you eat. Captain Fantastic quickly shows us, though, that this is act is (mostly) just a coming-of-age ritual for the family. They live in a house, grow crops, exercise in daily “training” sessions, and are home-schooled to think as well as learn.

Once they’re on the road in their bus called “Steve”, their lifestyle is shown in clear contrast to the society norm. The family bucks against the tide from the different styles of children upbringing at Ben’s sister’s (Kathryn Hahn, Happyish) house to the protective ideas of Ben’s father-in-law (Frank Langella, Robot & Frank).

This movie, written and directed by Matt Ross (28 Hotel Rooms), isn’t about which type of lifestyle is better (pros and cons are shown for both). It’s about the relationships and growth of the characters, who are played fantastically by the whole cast.

Ross himself directs the story lovingly, with sweeping vistas of countryside amid touching personal moments.

The only extra is a promotional featurette, but it does give some interesting insight into Ross’ inspiration for the film as well as Mortensen’s preparation for the role.

Still, this Blu-ray is worth its price for this gorgeous and heart-warming story alone.

RATINGS (out of 5 dishes): Movie  | Audio   | Video  | Overall

AnomalisaLike its title suggests, Anomalisa is an anomaly, which fits right in with the other movies from writer Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich), who also co-directed this film.

The model-animation film explores the idea of identity, and in one of the featurettes on the Blu-ray, we learn that Kaufman was inspired by a type of paranoia that makes a person believe that every other person in the world is the same. In Anomalisa, that paranoid person is Michael (voiced by Harry Potter‘s David Thewlis), a customer service expert who’s on a business trip where he’s going to give a talk about creating great customer service.

In his hotel, Michael is obviously unsatisfied with his life and goes looking for stimulation. He finds it in Lisa (Heart of Midnight‘s Jennifer Jason Leigh), a woman with a scar on her face, who stands out in the sea of everyman faces and voices of every person (all voiced by Hair High‘s Tom Noonan) around him.

Michael isn’t the most likeable character, another staple of Kaufman’s protagonists, and the storyline is slow at the beginning, plodding through the minor details of Michael’s journey from the airport to his hotel. But viewers who are patient and like their entertainment with a touch of the odd will appreciate the artistry and romance of Anomalisa.

The animation too is extremely well done, and when you watch the featurette “None of Them are You: Crafting Anomalisa,” that’s even more impressive. The interesting special feature includes interviews with Kaufman and the voice actors as well as details the enormous amount of work that went into film—and the problems, including running out of money a number of times to the piont that their tools were reposessed.

The Blu-ray contains two other featurettes, both equally interesting: “Intimacy in Miniature” looks at the movie’s sex scene, which Jennifer Jason Leigh said was the most intimate sex scene she’s ever played as an actress, and her partner was sitting six feet away. “The Sound of Unease” looks at the sound of the movie, which was purposefully left unperfect—like life.

    The Big Short
Christian Bale sees a real estate bubble burst in the future in The Big Short.

After getting to know writer/director Adam McKay through Will Ferrell comedies including the Anchorman movies, The Other Guys, Step Brothers and others, it seems odd to think of him at the helm of a film like The Big Short — that is until you see Margot Robbie (Focus) sipping champagne in a bubble bath explaining sub-prime mortgages. But it’s the light-hearted cameos like Robbie’s and others’ that elevate The Big Short from run-of-the-mill biography dramas.

The Big Short looks at the scary time in U.S. history — and later world history — when questionable activities by bankers led to a housing bubble that burst spectacularly in the mid-2000s. The film follows some of the investors who saw the burst coming and took it as an opportunity to make millions of dollars, but it comes with the price of knowing that their benefit will be at the expense of the economy as well as millions of people’s homes and lives.

McKay pulled together a stellar cast for the movie, which the featurette “In the Tranches: Casting” on the Blu-ray explains was an easy task. Christian Bale (Out of the Furnace), Brad Pitt (Fury), Steve Carell (Foxcatcher) and others signed on quickly when they got a look at the script, which was written by McKay and Charles Randolph based on the book by Michael Lewis, who also wrote the books that became Moneyball and The Blind Side. (There’s a reason McKay and Randolph won the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for this movie.) All the cast, from the headliners to bit players portraying well-meaning realtors and clueless mortgage brokers, do an excellent job of making their characters real.

And that helps ground The Big Short, because the subject matter is difficult for viewers. On the one hand, the characters are ambitious guys with a plan and you want them to succeed; on the other hand, they’re based on real people, and that fact, along with the very real effects of this tragedy, aren’t minimalized in the film. On the contrary, McKay makes it obvious that he sees the major characters as very flawed, with Ryan Gosling’s (The Gangster Squad) character Jared Vennett breaking the fourth wall to tell the audience that: Sure, he’s doing bad stuff, but he was taking advantage of a system that was broken way before him. It’s a story with no heroes, a trainwreck that you can’t take your eyes off, but with McKay behind the film, you can at least laugh while you cry. As Gosling says in the featurette “Unlikely Heroes: The Characters of The Big Short,” “Although the characters are walking a moral tightrope, the film never does.”

The Blu-ray’s picture and sound are great, and they’re coupled with a nice collection of special features. As well as the casting and characters featurettes, there’s one on McKay’s move to drama (“The Big Leap: Adam McKay”); the production team’s efforts to make the film authentic, from the characters, to the props, to the costumes (“Getting Real: Recreating an Era”); and one on the reality of the housing bubble (“The House of Cards: The Rise of the Fall”), which repeats a lot of the movie, but rounds out the extras nicely.

Finally there are a handful of deleted scenes that are brief but add some interesting contexts to the film, including one with Christian Bale’s Michael Burry dealing with his son’s Asperbergers. (And we have to applaud Paramount for going straight to the menu without forcing viewers through a collection of previews when the Blu-ray is first played.)

If you can stomach the disgust of how bankers screwed America, The Big Short Blu-ray is worth your time.

RATINGS (out of 5 dishes): Movie  | Audio  | Video  | Overall

Movie The GiftAcclaimed actor Joel Edgerton’s (The Great Gatsby) first foray into writer/director/actor on a feature film, The Gift is a quiet but taut thriller that keeps viewers guessing and, at the end, keeps them talking.

The story follows couple Simon (Jason Bateman, Bad Words) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall, Iron Man 3) when they’ve just moved to Los Angeles. Their life is seemingly on the track to good things. They’ve left behind some bad memories in Chicago and are starting anew with a nice house and Simon rising quickly in a new job. Then they meet Gordo (Edgerton), who went to high school with Simon and wants to reunite, and things start heading toward the strange.

The movie’s title comes from the expensive and thoughtful gifts that start showing up at the couple’s house, which Edgerton partners with more creepy actions (long stares, inappropriate attention) to keep viewers guessing about Gordo’s motives. It’s obvious that Gordo’s creep factor is high, but Edgerton plays the role tightly to stop viewers from ever truly deciding whether the character is just well-intentioned and misunderstood.

As Gordo’s actions affect Robyn and Simon, the movie proves itself to be as much a cat and mouse thriller as a dramatic look at the stresses of marriage.

Edgerton says as much in his full-length commentary with friend and editor Luke Doolan (Miracle Fish). Obviously enthusiastic about his film (as he should be), Edgerton does the vast majority of the talking in the commentary. But his thoughts are often interesting as he delves into his intentions for the characters and story as well as some behind-the-scenes mishaps.

The Blu-ray also includes a handful of deleted scenes and an alternate ending, which are interesting and brief but don’t add anything that the film itself already gives. They all come with the option of an introduction by Edgerton.

Rounding out the extras are a pair of featurettes, but really they’re snippets of interviews with Edgerton made into promotional teasers. A full featurette including interviews with Hall and Bateman would’ve been nice.

The film plays with stark light and ominous dark to intensify the mood, and they work nicely in the high-definition video. Same goes for the DTS-HD 5.1 sound.
