Who are we?

The Disc Dish editors have a combined 25 years experience in the home entertainment industry, and that doesn’t include the many years of experience of our intrepid contributors.

Editors:

Samantha Clark (sam@discdish.com) is the former Managing Editor/Online Editor of Video Business magazine. With 19 years experience in journalism, 12 in the home entertainment industry, Sam has been hooked on movies on since she saw E.T. then stared into the sky waiting to meet her own friendly alien. Thanks to her husband’s shared love of movies, Sam reviews Blu-ray discs in a true home theater, with a 118-inch screen, projector and cushy recliners with cup holders.

Laurence Lerman (laurence@discdish.com) saw Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest when he was 13 years old and that’s all it took. He has been writing about film and video for more than a quarter of a century for magazines, anthologies, websites and most recently, Video Business magazine, where he served as the Reviews Editor for 15 years.

Samantha Abramovitz is a New Jersey native currently navigating the streets and subways of New York City. She majored in cinema on a whim at SUNY Binghamton after taking a course on Japanese cinema, and later went on to receive a Master’s degree in cinema studies at NYU Tisch. Her pastimes include rewatching movies and television shows she’s seen countless times, playing video games, and uploading pictures of her cat to Instagram.

Cheryl Cheng reviewed DVD and Blu-ray titles for Video Business magazine and has a special place in her heart for foreign and independent films.

Janine McGoldrick is a dedicated fan of the 1940 film Kitty Foyle, directed by Sam Wood, written by Dalton Trumbo and starring Ginger Rogers, who won an Oscar for her portrayal. And seeing that film is all it took to make her a lifelong movie lover! Janine is excited to add her insights to the great team at DishDisc.com.

Gary Frisch has been contributing laserdisc, DVD and Blu-ray reviews to Video Business magazine, Home Theater Magazine, Home Theater Buyer’s Guide, Stereophile Guide to Home Theater and the DVD Guide for more than 14 years. He still has a collection of more than 40 laserdiscs, along with a working auto-reverse LD player, but thinks Blu-ray is da bomb and anxiously awaits the original Star Wars trilogy so he can buy it for the fifth time.

Ed Grant has written about film for a wide range of periodicals, books and websites. He edited the reference book The Motion Picture Guide Annual and, since 1993, has produced and hosted the weekly cable program Media Funhouse, which Time magazine called “the most eclectic and useful movie show on TV.”

Alex Kikuchi loves movies of every size and variety and has fancied himself a film critic ever since Mystery Science Theater made it look so easy when he was a kid in the 1990s.

Chris Koseluk has written about the entertainment industry for numerous magazines and newspapers including The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Make-Up Artist Magazine, BackStage West, Premiere, Video Business, Movie Times, Newsday, The Chicago Tribune, The San Francisco Chronicle, the Portland Oregonian and the Houston Chronicle. He currently runs MediaMischief.com. As a partner in Never Dull Productions, Chris wrote and directed the feature documentary Sled Shots about the U.S. Paralympic Sled Hockey Team.

Buzz McClain reviews DVDs for Playboy magazine and is a former critic for Video Business magazine. But what he really wants to do is direct. studied theater and is a huge film buff. She has been regaling her family with her reviews since elementary school.

Jennifer Netherby is a freelance writer who has written about movies, music and technology for Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Billboard and Video Business, where she worked as a reporter for nine years. She’s addicted to British crime dramas and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Megan Quinn is a former contributing editor and movie reviewer for Video Business magazine. She has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri, which she puts to good use raising money for nonprofits in New York. Most importantly, she is Henry’s mom.

Memo Salazar attempts many things and accomplishes few. His big three are making films, music, and comics, but he’ll throw photography, graphic design and film criticism into the ring for good measure. He’ll even make you a hand-painted t-shirt if you ask nicely. You can track his activity here when there’s nothing else to do at work.

Irv Slifkin has been reviewing movies since before he got kicked off of his high school radio station for panning The Towering Inferno in 1974. He has written the books VideoHound’s Groovy Movies: Far-Out Films of the Psychedelic Era and Filmadelphia: A Celebration of a City’s Movies, and has contributed film reportage and reviews to such outlets as Entertainment Weekly, The Hollywood Reporter, Video Business magazine and National Public Radio.
