  • Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD Release: A Ghost Story

    Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: Oct. 3, 2017
    Price: DVD $12.99, Blu-ray $18.99
    Studio: Lionsgate

Written and directed by David Lowery, the fantastical drama-romance A Ghost Story re-unites the filmmaker with the co-stars of his well-liked 2013 film Ain’t Them Bodies Saints: Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) and Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).

The vaguest of plot descriptions (as it was wisely stated with a degree of subtlety on the press release) ) describes the film as being about a young couple who — after being separated by loss — discover an eternal connection and a love that is infinite. Er…we think it has something to do with a ghost (see picture)….

A Ghost Story is not particularly scary, nor all that creepy. What it is is sad and even a bit absurd (as can be seen in one of the ghosts who wears a decorative sheet). And with its gentle acknowledgement of the afterlife—the existence of a life outside of our own world–A Ghost Story all proves to be quite a gentle piece.

A “surprise” movie that was reportedly crafted in secret and cost a tiny budget of $150,000, A Ghost Story received raves from the critics, garnering a 98% Fresh Rating at Rotten Tomatoes based on 197 published reviews. Sadly, the critical praise didn’t translate into strong box office returns, with the movie ringing up a lousy $1.6 million at the box office during its limited theatrical run in July.

The Blu-ray and DVD feature an audio commentary, two never-before-seen featurettes and a deleted scene.

As word of the disaster reaches the Coast Guard in Chatham, Mass., Chief Warrant Officer Daniel Cluff (Eric Bana, Lone Survivor) orders a daring rescue mission. InterstellarWriter/director Christopher Nolan’s (The Dark Knight Rises) time-travel epic Interstellar got much love from critics and fans alike when it was in theaters, earning more than $185 million at the box office.

Matthew McConaughey (TV’s True Detective), who just seems to get better with every role he plays, is Cooper, an ex-pilot who must leave his quiet new life as a farmer and his young son and daughter to try to save humanity. But since his expedition will take him lightyears away, even if he does make it back to Earth, his kids will be grown.

Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) and Casey Affleck (Out of the Furnace) play his children, John Lithgow (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) is his father-in-law and Michael Caine (The Eagle Has Landed) the scientist with a crazy idea of saving people. The movie also stars Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables), Matt Damon (Elysium), Topher Grace (The Big Wedding), Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games) and Ellen Burstyn (Draft Day).

ParaNormanThe ParaNorman Blu-ray gives fans of stop-motion animation an insider’s look at the technique as well as the filmmakers who love it.

The family movie honors its stop-motion predecessor Coraline in that it blends comedy with light horror, in this case ghosts and zombies. But, also like Coraline, ParaNorman is dark, and some scary parts might be a bit too spooky for the youngest members of the family, especially the creepy, albeit sweet, ending.

ParaNorman tells the story of young Norman (voiced by Let Me In‘s Kodi Smit-McPhee), who can see dead people. Norman’s gift isn’t appreciated by many people, least of all his father (Jeff Garlin, TV’s Curb Your Enthusiasm) and the other kids in school. One, however, the overweight, bullied Neil (Tucker Albrizzi, TV’s Good Luck Charlie), befriends him despite Norman’s reluctance.

When Norman’s equally gifted uncle dies, he passes on a task to the boy: to appease a wicked witch before she unleashes hell on Earth. Norman’s not quite sure how to do that, however, and when he misses the deadline, undead zombies are brought to life and harrass the town. With help from his older sister (Anna Kendrick, End of Watch), the boy she has a crush on (Casey Affleck, Tower Heist) and Neil, Norman must find a way to get the zombies back in the ground and stop the witch’s curse from terrorizing his town ever again.

The film’s stop-motion animation is stunning, and it’s all beautifully rendered in the Blu-ray’s high definition. Norman’s town of funny looking people is bright, clear and colorful. And the high-def sound is equally good, with the zombies giving a nice squealch as they dig their way out of the ground.

Fans of stop motion will be just as delighted by the special features as the film. The Blu-ray is stuffed with featurettes that go behind-the-scenes of ParaNorman, including interviews with the creators, the artists and the voice stars. One thing is clear: The artists absolutely love what they do.

In a few of the featurettes, the artists tell us that making this movie is like the greatest revenge of the geeks and that, even though they had a hard time in high school, they feel vindicated now that they all get to do exactly what they want.

The featurettes also go into detail about how the artists made the film’s exquisite models, from the material used in the hair to the way the characters’ movements are created.

All the featurettes are fun, informative and worth a watch, especially if you’re a fan of this type of filmmaking.

Also on the disc are some interesting preliminary animatic sequences and a commentary by first-time writer/director Chris Butler (Corpse Bride) and director Sam Fell (The Tale of Despereaux), further showing their bubbling enthusiasm. It’s to not let it be infectious.

ParaNormanAn animated mix of Medium and The Walking Dead for kids, ParaNorman is a spooky family film.

The story follows Norman Babcock, voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee, who knows a bit about spooky having played friend-to-vampires Owen in Let Me In. Despite his unbelieving parents, Norman sees ghosts, which also makes him an outcast to everyone except candy-loving Neil (Tucker Albrizzi, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked).

Norman’s uncle tells him that a horrible curse is going to be struck on their town that night then dies, leaving Norman to stop the curse before zombies take over.

Casey Affleck (Good Will Hunting), Leslie Mann (The Change-Up) and Jeff Garlin (TV’s Curb Your Enthusiasm) also voice characters in the movie, which was animated by stop motion.

Critics applauded the film, which is the first feature co-directed and written by Chris Butler, storyboard artist for stop-motion-animated movies Corpse Bride and Coraline. Co-director Sam Fell directed Flushed Away and The Tale of Despereaux.

But ParaNorman didn’t exactly sing at the box office. The film earned $54 million, less than Coraline‘s $75 million back in 2009 and less than the other spooky 2012 animated film, Hotel Transylvania, which grossed almost ParaNorman‘s full earnings in just its first week.

All disc versions of the PG-rated movie come with these special features:

    • “Preliminary Animatic Sequences” with commentary by Butler and Fell
    • featurette “Peering Through the Veil” about the creation of the ParaNorman world and characters
    • seven short featurettes about Norman and his co-stars
    • commentary with Fell and Butler.

  • Blu-ray Release: Good Will Hunting 15th Anniversary

    Blu-ray Release Date: Aug. 21, 2012
    Price: Blu-ray $14.99
    Studio: Lionsgate

Good Will HuntingFifteen years after Matt Damon (The Adjustment Bureau) and Ben Affleck (The Company Men) got their Bostonian accents on and paved their own way to stardom with Good Will Hunting, Lionsgate is celebrating with a new high-definition Blu-ray release.

The Oscar-winning movie scored a Best Screenplay Academy Award for Damon and Affleck and helped Hollywood see them as leading men. The 1997 drama film also won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for co-star Robin Williams (Dead Poets Society) and was nominated for another six statues, including Best Picture. Produced for an estimated $10 million, Good Will Hunting was a whopping success for Lionsgate, grossing $138 million in theaters.

The R-rated movie was released on Blu-ray in 2011, which makes us wonder why the studio didn’t just wait a year. But we do get a couple new special features in the 15th anniversary disc:

    • “Reflecting On a Journey: Good Will Hunting 15 Years Later” four-part featurette showcasing new interviews with Damon, Affleck, Williams, director Gus Van Sant and producers Chris Moore and Kevin Smith remembering the making of the film
    • “Matt Damon Remembers Good Will Hunting” new interview with Damon looking back at the movie and his experience making it

All the rest of the bonuses are on the earlier Blu-ray:

    • audio commentary with Van Sant, Damon and Affleck
    • deleted scenes with optional audio commentary
    • Academy Award Best Picture montage
    • production featurette
    • “Miss Misery” music video
    • behind-the-scenes footage
    • theatrical trailer

If you haven’t seen the movie, Good Will Hunting follows the exploits of Will Hunting (Damon) a math genius who’s working as a janitor at MIT. When he’s discovered, he gets the opportunity to study math in exchange for a jail sentence for assault, but it comes with the requirement that he also see a psychiatrist (Williams).

The film has plenty of other name actors too: Minnie Driver (Conviction), Stellan Skarsgard (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), Casey Affleck (Tower Heist) and Cole Hauser (TV’s Chase).
