Dwayne Johnson infiltrates a drug cartel to win his son's freedom in Snitch.

Williams (HBO’s Boardwalk Empire), Melina Kanakaredes (TV’s CSI:NY), Nadine Velazquez (Flight), and Susan Sarandon (Arbitrage).

  • Blu-ray, DVD, Digital, VOD Release: The Impossible

    Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: April 23, 2013
    Price: DVD $29.95, Blu-ray $39.99
    Studio: Summit/Lionsgate

    The Impossible movie scene
Tom Holland and Naomi Watts cling to their lives in The Impossible.

Naomi Watts (Fair Game) garnered her second Academy Award nomination for her starring role in the 2012 drama-thriller The Impossible.

The film offers an account of a family caught with tens of thousands of strangers in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of the modern era: the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

In the film, Marie Bennett (Watts), her husband Henry (Ewan McGregor, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) and their three sons Lucas (Tom Holland), Tomas and Simon are on Christmas holiday at a tropical resort Khao Lak, Thailand. A devastating tsunami hits on December 26, destroying the coastal zone and sweeping up everyone in the flood. Maria and Lucas are separated from the others and, with Maria’s leg badly injured, the two set out for help, finding it from locals and at an overcrowded hospital. Meanwhile, Henry and the boys search frantically for the missing members of their family.

Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage) and based on the harrowing real-life experience of one family during the Indian Ocean tsunami, The Impossible was well-received by the critics when it was released to theaters in the U.S. in December, 2012 and around the world the next month. Though there was an outcry that the film focuses on the effects of the tragedy on a “Western” and not the thousands of indigenous people whose lives were lost or affected by the tsunami, the film has grossed some $145 million at the worldwide box office.

The film will also be available on April 2 as a digital download, three weeks prior to its Blu-ray, DVD and Video on Demand release.

The Blu-ray and DVD contain the following features:

    • Audio commentary with director J.A. Bayona, writer Sergio G. Sánchez and producer Belén Atienza and María Belón (the woman on whom Naomi Watts’s character is based)
    • “Casting The Impossible” featurette

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn -- Part 2The final movie in the Twilight franchise? Author Stephenie Meyer has said there’s a possibility of more books, so never say never. But in the meantime, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 is the end.

Of course, on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download, the end is available anytime.

Breaking Dawn — Part 2 takes off where Part 1 ended, with the birth of Bella (Kristen Stewart, Snow White and the Huntsman) and Edward’s (Robert Pattinson, Cosmopolis) vampire child bringing conflict between Bella and werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner, Abduction), the third in the paranormal love triangle. The fast-growing child also spawns an all-out war between the Cullens and the ancient vampire Volturi.

Part 2 grossed a tidy $290 million in domestic theaters. No surprise, given the success of the previous films in the franchise. And critics liked Part 2 better than Part 1, even though reviews were still lukewarm. As Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers said of the PG-13 movie, “You’re going to hear a lot about Breaking Dawn — Part 2 being the best of the Twilight movies. That’s like saying a simple head cold is preferable to swine flu.” So, view at your own risk.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 Blu-ray boxThe two-disc DVD and Blu-ray contain these special features:

    • Seven-part making-of documentary “Forever: Filming Breaking Dawn Part 2
      • Chapter 1: Rebirth

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1Twilight fans rejoice! There’s more of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 to love. Yep, 8 minutes more. Eight whole minutes.

In what appears to be a way of squeezing out more of fans’ money, Summit’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 Extended Edition offers eight minutes of footage not previously released before and added back in by director Bill Condon.

Condon also recorded a commentary track for the extended version of the film, delving deeper into the old and new scenes with Bella (Kristen Stewart, Snow White and the Huntsman), Edward (Robert Pattinson, Cosmopolis) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner, Abduction).

The 124-minute extended edition is unrated, but don’t expect anything too shocking. The scenes were created for the original PG-13 movie.

The Blu-ray and DVD also offer a digital copy of the film and instant streaming via UltraViolet.

The original DVD and Blu-ray of Breaking Dawn: Part 1 was released in February 2012.

  • Blu-ray, Digital, DVD Release: Alex Cross

    Blu-ray, Digital & DVD Release Date: Feb. 5, 2013
    Price: DVD $29.95, Blu-ray $39.99
    Studio: Summit/Lionsgate

Alex CrossTyler Perry (For Colored Girls) steps away from Medea and gets more serious in the thriller movie Alex Cross.

Based on James Patterson‘s novel Cross, the film follows the Detroit Police Department homicide detective/psychologist (Perry) as he takes on one of his toughest cases. Cross plays a cat and mouse game with a serial killer called Picasso (Matthew Fox, TV’s Lost). After Picasso makes the mission personal, Cross is pushed to the edge of his moral and psychological limits.

The character of Cross is, of course, the same one who was played by Morgan Freeman (Seven) in Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider.

Rated PG-13, Alex Cross also stars Giancarlo Esposito (TV’s Breaking Bad), Rachel Nichols (Conan the Barbarian), Jean Reno (Armored), Ed Burns (Edward Burns) and John C. McGinley (Platoon). The film was directed by Rob Cohen (The Fast and the Furious), from a script by Marc Moss (Along Came a Spider) and newcomer Kerry Williamson.

Alex Cross grossed $25 million in theaters after dismal reviews from critics — only 13% approval, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Entertainment Weekly‘s Lisa Schwarzbaum called the film is “so cloddish, slapdash, gracelessly written, and visually fugly that it’s difficult to distinguish Perry’s limitations in the role from those of the whole unpleasant enterprise.” Ouch!

Moviegoers liked it a little better, giving the film a 57% rating, but the reviews weren’t that much better than the roughly 35% approval Freeman’s movies got from critics.

Both the Blu-ray and DVD versions of Alex Cross have these special features:

    • audio commentary with Rob Cohen
    • deleted scenes
    • featurette “The Psychologist and the Butcher: Adapting and Filming Alex Cross
